During the second year of residency, four months are spent on the surgical services at Bellevue and Tisch Hospitals. During two of these months, the PGY-2 rotates through Oncology, participating in the workup and management of oncology patients at both Tisch and Bellevue Hospitals. All endeavors are supervised by the oncology fellows, faculty, and pathologists who are members of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The second year gynecology rotation at Tisch Hospital provides the resident with a variety of surgical experiences. This resident participates in the ambulatory and inpatient settings, performing major and minor operations, both endoscopic and open, with gynecologic surgeons who are generalists and subspecialists. The resident also receives an initial exposure to Urogynecology by attending weekly sessions in the newly formed Continence Center.
Obstetrical training during the second year consists of both "low-risk" and "high-risk" rotations for two months each. The night float rotation at Tisch Hospital augments the first year experience in labor and delivery management, progressing towards more complicated cesarean sections and operative vaginal deliveries. On the "high-risk" service, residents work closely with the Maternal-Fetal Medicine division in the management of complicated pregnancies. The resident also receives ultrasound training by rotating through the state-of-the-art Obstetrics and Gynecology Ultrasound Unit. This unit is under the direction of Drs. Ilan Timor and Ana Monteagudo, well-known experts in the field. This ultrasound training supplements the "high-risk" obstetrical experience and allows residents to hone their skills in transvaginal ultrasonography.
The second year resident also participates in the Reproductive Choice Rotation performing both first and second trimester terminations. The resident is involved in the initial work-up and ultrasound, the preoperative placement of laminaria, the procedure and postoperative care and contraception. During this experience the resident serves as one of the juniors on the inpatient gynecology service at Bellevue Hospital.
