Division of Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery

Physicians in the Division of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, a collaboration between NYU Langone Health’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Department of Urology, offer patient-centered treatment to women with pelvic floor disorders.

Under the guidance of Benjamin M. Brucker, MD, division director, our urogynecologists evaluate patients using advanced diagnostic techniques such as multichannel video urodynamics and cystourethroscopy. We offer nonsurgical and minimally invasive surgical approaches to treat a full range of pelvic floor disorders; train medical students, residents, and fellows; and incorporate ongoing research into our clinical practice.

Our Role in Education

Our urogynecologists introduce medical students to the field and provide residents with subspecialty training. Our fellowship, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, provides outstanding training to obstetrics and gynecology and urology residents seeking subspecialty certification.

Training for Medical Students

We provide didactic lectures and occasionally serve as preceptors for medical students during their clerkship in obstetrics and gynecology. In addition, we offer a four-week elective course on the clinical and academic aspects of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery.

Training for Residents

Second-year obstetrics and gynecology residents spend four weeks rotating through our division and receive an in-depth introduction to the subspecialty of female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. The rotation includes outpatient and surgical experiences, as well as didactic education and weekly journal clubs. Residents train at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn. Learn more about the residency program in obstetrics and gynecology.

Training for Fellows

Together, the Division of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery and the Department of Urology offer an accredited Fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. Under the guidance of faculty from both departments, fellows from either discipline receive comprehensive, well-rounded training that also includes a rotation in colorectal surgery. In addition, fellows have dedicated research time and complete a senior thesis.

Our Role in Research

Our division is actively involved in ongoing research that helps to ensure continual improvement in patient care and enhances our role as a teaching institution.

We are conducting a number of clinical studies, including a multicenter surgical trial comparing mesh with native tissue repairs for pelvic organ prolapse; a study of the use of voiding diaries in the assessment of overactive bladder; and a trial evaluating the efficacy of percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation in the treatment of urinary urgency and frequency, as well as pelvic pain. Learn more about our clinical trials.

Our Role in Patient Care

Our urogynecologists at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital offer advanced and comprehensive care for women with a wide range of conditions, including pelvic organ prolapse, fecal and urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, recurrent urinary tract infections, hematuria, and congenital malformations of the reproductive tract.

We also provide female pelvic medicine and reconstruction services at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, under the direction of Lauren E. Stewart, MD, and collaborate with our colleagues in the Department of Urology to provide premier patient care.
