Division of Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility

The combination of academic, scientific, and technical expertise in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, part of NYU Langone Health’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, makes us one of the most respected fertility programs and clinical divisions in the country.

Guided by James A. Grifo, MD, PhD, division director, our reproductive endocrinologists and physician–scientists are actively engaged in basic, translational, and clinical research. We also train medical students, residents, and fellows in this specialized field.

Our clinicians frequently make significant contributions to the field of reproductive medicine. We were instrumental in the development of preimplantation genetic screening and diagnosis. A new partnership between the NYU Langone Fertility Center and the Prelude Fertility Network allows us to expand and further enhance our reproductive clinical services, including in vitro fertilization (IVF) and oocyte freezing.

Our Role in Education

Our reproductive endocrinologists introduce medical students to the field, provide residents with further training in infertility, and participate in a fellowship program. Trainees obtain most of their clinical and research experience in a private office setting at the NYU Langone Fertility Center. They also get some exposure to patients at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.

Training for Medical Students

Our faculty provide didactic lectures and occasionally serve as preceptors for medical students during their six-week clerkship in obstetrics and gynecology. In addition, students may choose a four-week elective course that teaches the evaluation and management of the clinical disorders of reproductive endocrinology.

Training for Residents

Obstetrics and gynecology residents rotate through our division in their second year, during which they spend one month learning how to compile a workup of an infertile couple. Residents also study the various medical and surgical treatments for infertility, including IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies. We also provide didactic lectures throughout the four-year obstetrics and gynecology residency.

Training for Fellows

We prepare fellows for careers as reproductive endocrinologists. Our three-year reproductive endocrinology and infertility fellowship is accredited by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and leads to board certification in reproductive endocrinology. During the program, fellows receive rigorous clinical training and complete laboratory and clinical research.

Our Role in Research

Research is an important part of our commitment to furthering patient care, enabling us to develop innovations in preimplantation genetic screening, blastocyst culture, oocyte freezing, and improved IVF techniques for women 40 and older. Much of our research has a basic component that translates to clinical applications.

Our physicians have published thousands of papers on infertility and surgical research conducted in the laboratories at the NYU Langone Fertility Center. Our faculty are regularly invited to discuss their research around the world.

Our Role in Patient Care

The highly skilled and dedicated physicians and embryologists in our division help patients overcome infertility via oocyte freezing and storage, genetic testing, IVF, egg donation, surrogacy, and male factor infertility services. We have achieved pregnancy rates that are among the highest in the country. Together with physicians in the Department of Urology, we treat male infertility. We also serve as a resource for our colleagues at NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center who have patients seeking to preserve their fertility. We offer reproductive care to patients of all backgrounds, whether single, married, gay, lesbian, or transgender.

Our Faculty

Our faculty is highly skilled in reproductive endocrinology.
